Podcast #2 – Community Development in heritage regeneration: the Brymbo Heritage Project
In this podcast* I meet Gary Brown, project manager of the Brymbo Heritage Project in north east Wales, to discuss how Community Development is at the heart of regeneration work that has recently been awarded almost £2 million of Lottery funding.
Brymbo is the site of a former steelworks that shut in 1990. The heritage group was later set up by former steelworkers but has over the years developed a broader community appeal within and beyond Brymbo.
Gary talks about the importance of seeking out the dissenting voices and “aggressive apathy” that can sometimes be present in communities; the importance of social media to the Project’s community engagement; and how a shared power model underpins how the Project works in partnership with the community and local stakeholders.
